Breastfeeding and Infant Physiotherapy
Visit Length: 30-60 minutes

Breastfeeding support from a physiotherapy perspective encompasses the parent and child and all forms of feeding.

Assessment includes: 

• A thorough intake/history, review of feeding experience, as well as relevant medical history
• Baby's jaw, neck and tongue function
• Review of reflexes and motor development
• Observation of feeding (posture, biomechanics, baby position, latch) 

Treatment includes:

• Education and advice regarding optimal feeding positions and postures
• Applicable manual treatment of baby for torticollis (head turned to one side), tight jaw muscles, uncoordinated suck, difficulty with latching or plagiocephaly (a flat spot on babies head)

Mastitis and Blocked Ducts
How can physiotherapy help with this?

• Therapeutic breast massage for pain management, restore normal milk flow and to help reduce swelling 
• Help with latch
• Education on self-care, self-management and prevention
• Help with pump fitting
